Kraken is the technology tentacle of the Octopus Energy Group.

Kraken Utilities

All technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 700 people globally. Our engineers work in ‘super teams’ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers.

Teams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach. Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production.

We’re now charging our Kraken platform to power utilities beyond just energy (think water, broadband,..) and have created a new business area Kraken Utilities. Over the last year we have built this team from scratch to re-architect, design, and develop our Kraken software platform to solve complex industry wide problems within the water and broadband sectors (customer experience, water leak detection software).

The Kraken Utilities team have already signed 4 clients (Portsmouth Water, Severn Trent, Leep, and Cuckoo Broadband), and are currently in the exciting design and build phase of the software. Together with the rest of the team, you will bring the same revolutionary customer experience, operational excellence and speed of innovation that Kraken is powering across energy retailers to other sectors.

We’re building a team to work fluently, move fast, and make a tangible difference in energy tech. Our current projects span electric vehicles, energy retail, smart home device management, heat pumps, and more. Our projects are ambitious and seek to help both Octopus Energy customers and the clean energy transition.

Kraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills.

Our Team

We launched our flagship app with a small team of 4 engineers, product, and design in 2021. Since then we’ve grown to multiple cross-functional teams, 18 mobile engineers, and serve over two million monthly active customers in 5 different countries.

We’re expanding to meet the challenges of rolling out a single platform which supports diverse utility markets around the world. Every team member helps define culture and processes necessary to work collaboratively and effectively across multiple product teams, whilst instilling good engineering practices for the team as a whole.

Our Technology

As an organisation we like to move quickly. This is true both in how we operate as a business and the technology choices we make. We were very early adopters of Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) and used the technology when it was in pre-alpha, at scale, to great success. It helps us share code across Android and iOS without the user experience tradeoffs.

KMP was officially released in late 2023 so we don’t expect our applicants to have experience using it. It powers the extensive shared layer across our Android and iOS apps, with UI powered by Jetpack Compose and SwiftUI. Our app is built around MVVM and utilises unidirectional data flow with a layered architecture. Our view models are written using Jetpack Compose and compliment our state driven UI.

We release updates to customers weekly. We gain release confidence with our suite of automation and unit tests running in CI (GitHub Actions), and configure features remotely using feature flags.

Some of our coding conventions are open-source.
