Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe!

Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy.

We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimising renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone.

It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

Our team
All technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 300 people globally. Our engineers work in ‘super teams’ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers.

Our technology team has grown extremely quickly as a result.  With this rapid growth, we are looking for proactive Product Managers to join our team and work with our developers to ensure what they do has the highest impact for our customers.

The lifeblood of an energy system is meter readings.  We have clients that ingest upwards of 200 million readings every day.  These require a big data system that can run data quality rules and aggregations, and can feed readings to customers, billing, settlement, analytics and other systems.  This is a core part of the platform as we aim to provide the same product to clients across the globe and in different markets.

We need someone to own the Meter Data Management product, set out its vision and direction and to ensure our developers are working optimally towards our unified mission.  You’ll need to be a self-starter: someone who sees a problem and can’t help but want to fix it.  You’ll be well organised, working methodically and clearly to ensure projects go from inception to completion.

What you'll do

    • Your job will be to ensure that our Meter Data Management product can deliver Kraken’s functionality reliably, swiftly and consistently to clients in Europe, the US, Asia and Australia - today and into the future. To do this, you’ll work within our core engineering department alongside a team of around five developers, who are a mixture of data, backend and platform engineers.
    • Day-to-day, you will:
    • Liaise with tech, operations, our clients and others to identify how best to manage meter readings at high volume.  You’ll spot problems, take ownership and see them through to resolution.
    • Gather technical requirements from internal and external stakeholders, define the approach and help write pitch documents and tickets so developers can hit the ground running.
    • Own the backlog of work to support development of the Meter Data Management product.  We use Asana to keep track and prioritise what’s up next and what’s still to-do. Help report on progress of projects, new features and your team’s roadmap across the wider organisation.
    • Help teams that are working on front-line support to quickly resolve issues. Contribute to improving the product management community at Kraken, including thinking strategically and supporting other team members.

    • We put the customer first wherever we are in the business and work empathetically with one another to deliver the best possible outcomes.

What you'll need

    • To have previous product management experience.
    • To be able to recognise what needs to be done (and, just as importantly, what doesn’t need to be done right now) based on the overall goals of the team and our strategic direction.
    • To be able to work in a dynamic environment.  Fantastic ideas come from everywhere in Kraken, so you’ll need to be able to spot and harness them.  Although we have (very quickly!) become a large company, experience in a fast-paced start-up or scale-up would be a plus.
    • To be curious and willing to roll up your sleeves.  For example, this might mean helping to build out and prioritise our tech hiring roadmap.  You might even find yourself digging into problems using SQL or data science notebooks or by diving into the logging system.
    • To have excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact with people with varying levels of technical knowledge.
    • To understand big data terminology and have a high level grasp of technologies such as Apache Spark.  Ideally, you will have experience of working in big data.
    • To (ideally) have knowledge of the energy industry, whether that’s in the UK or globally.

Why else you'll love about us

    • Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!
