Product Manager - Kraken Utilities (Catalogue)Octopus Energy

London, U 12-04-2024
Kraken is the technology tentacle of the Octopus Energy Group.

About the Opportunity

At Kraken Technologies we’re looking to revolutionise the energy system to make power cheaper, greener, and better for people around the world. Our tech platform ‘Kraken’ is already licensed to support 55 million customer accounts globally, and we aim to serve 100 million by 2027.

Our Technology Team has grown extremely quickly as a result, tripling in size within the last 18 months. With this rapid growth, we are looking for proactive Product Managers to join our team and work with our developers, ensuring what they do has the highest impact for our customers.

Other organisations have product owners, project leads and scrum masters, but we like to be organic and self-organising, so you’ll gain experience doing all of the above.

You’ll need to be a self-starter: someone who sees a problem and can’t help but want to fix it! You’ll be well organised, working methodically and clearly to ensure projects go from inception to completion.

We put the customer first wherever we are in the business and work empathetically with one another to deliver the best possible outcomes.. We need someone able to work across multiple teams and ensure our developers are working optimally towards our unified goal.

About the Team

We’re currently providing licences of our platform to serve the water and broadband industries and have created a new team - Kraken Utilities. Over the last year we have built this team from scratch to re-architect, design, and develop our Kraken software platform to solve complex industry wide problems within the water and broadband sectors (such as customer experience & water leak detection software).

The Kraken Utilities team is in a very exciting growth phase. We are currently 80+ people (engineers, product, implementation, design, strategy) along with 500+ people in the overall Kraken world.

This role will be joining as a Product Manager focussed specifically on the telecommunications industry - working in a small team and collaborating really closely with our engineering, implementation, and strategy teams.

What you'll do:

    • Liaise with tech, operations, strategy, our clients and others to identify new features in Kraken that need to be built, enhanced or fixed. You’ll spot problems, take ownership and see them through to resolution.
    • Gather requirements, define approach, and document so developers can hit the ground running and support them during a project.
    • Own the backlog of work to support development of our technology.
    • Keep track and prioritise what’s up next and what’s still to-do (we use Asana for this, so a familiarity of this tool helps).
    • Own your team’s roadmap, and help report on progress of features or projects within this.
    • Help teams that are working on front-line support to quickly resolve issues.
    • Think strategically about, and contribute to what we can do better as a Product Team.

What you'll have:

    • Must have substantial product management experience in a B2B context (ideally enterprise software), and in a fast growing product company.
    • Must have experience managing product catalogues.
    • To be able to work in a dynamic and sometimes chaotic environment.
    • To be able to recognise what needs to be done and, just as importantly, what doesn’t need to be done right now.
    • You’ll have a track record of working with competing demands and making decisions to get critical work done.
    • To be a strategic thinker, always relating your decision making back to the overall goals of the team and the customer experience.
    • Experience in a fast-paced start-up or scale-up would be a plus.
    • To be willing to roll up your sleeves. For example, this might mean learning some development skills (e.g. SQL) for data analysis, possibly even reading and amending code.
    • To be curious and a great listener - fantastic ideas come from everywhere in Kraken Technologies, so you’ll need to be able to spot and harness them.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact with people with varying levels of technical knowledge
    • Experience in the telecommunications industry or other utilities is a bonus.
