Kraken is the technology tentacle of the Octopus Energy Group.
Our team
All technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 300 people globally. Our engineers work in ‘super teams’ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers.
Teams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach. Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production.

Our technology
On the server-side, we mainly use Python. Most of our websites are powered by Django, Django-REST-framework and GraphQL (Graphene).
We use AWS heavily as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. See, for example, Django, ELB health checks and continuous delivery.
Client-side, we use React, htmx and SASS; our mobile apps are built using native code or React Native.
The account journeys team is responsible for implementing and maintaining the code which enables customer journeys through Kraken, making life easier for both our staff and customers. By its very nature this involves domain modelling of complex real-life problems, in particular when considering that our systems need to cater for multiple territories worldwide. Could you write software that models a customer moving house, regardless of whether they are a broadband customer in the UK, or an energy customer in Australia?
If translating complicated business problems into well architected software and general problem solving is something you enjoy, then this job might be for you. We are a small (currently four software engineers) team with equivalent teams in Kraken’s other operating regions, who we collaborate with regularly in building a truly global system. We are currently looking to grow our team by a mid-level engineer.
We would prefer someone who can work in our London office but will consider remote candidates. However, you do need to be able to work in the UK.
