Salary - £51,395 to £58,500 (depending on location and proven ability)

Working hours - Full time

Contract type/duration - Fixed term contract until 29th March 2024

What will you be doing?

You will be working as part of a team of Data Scientists, Software Engineers and Technologists to address place-based challenges. We use our expertise in data processing, statistics, machine learning, multi-domain modelling and visualisation to go from place-based problems to appropriate and practical data solutions. We are collaborative with other teams and experts across the catapult, working very closely with specialists in housing, local planning, new mobility technologies, critical infrastructure, wellbeing and more.


You will work across multiple disciplines and take responsibility for the delivery of innovative projects. You would be expected to work well both in dealing with conceptual problems and data strategy as well as being able to support the team with data led thinking and high-level data analysis. We’re looking for somebody who is motivated by solving real challenges and getting their work into the hands of users, who wants to stay on top of the latest technologies and work with the team to keep us at the cutting edge of tools, approaches and best practise


Key Responsibilities

  • Work together with designers, full-stack engineers and data scientists, you will be able to convert problems into data driven solutions.
  • Work with data scientists, you will be hands-on in the exploration of new data sources, assessing suitability and refining the architecture and data strategy to incorporate them
  • Work in an agile manner to develop prototypes that we can quickly seek feedback on, responding to newly identified priorities and re-scoping to ensure we build on feedback.
  • Work with stakeholders to define problems in a manner tangible to both technical and non-technical team members
  • Create and present summary strategic recommendations to client stakeholders, identifying parameters, establishing aims and objectives for data use and outcomes.
  • Deep dive hands-on exploratory data discovery and exploration for selected stakeholders focusing on high priority data sets.
  • Synthesise key insights from data-related user research, highlight gaps, identifying pain points, understanding opportunity for value.
  • Identify what tools would be the best fit for specific data-based problems and outlining high level architectures

Requirements

What kind of person are we looking for?

You are a well-rounded data-focused individual with the ability to work conceptually and a desire to tackle interesting problems. You are comfortable working fast and making things tangible in an innovation environment, prototyping quickly for feedback and iteration. You are keen to learn and extend the breadth of your skills both technically and non-technically, and you’re excited by shaping our solutions to problems, meeting stakeholder and collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds.


You will have:


  • Flexible programming ability, we work in python so knowledge of the Python statistical data-wrangling stack would be of benefit
  • Knowledge of databases and ability to use SQL to query data
  • The capacity to work with users and stakeholders to collaboratively develop and present software designs and outcomes
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Good, clear and appropriate communication to both technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to adjust and respond to others with different perspectives
