We are looking for an experienced SQL Server Database Engineer to join our Data Platform Operational team. The ideal candidate is an experienced SQL Server database administrator with knowledge of Microsoft Azure. The Database Engineer will support our customer app teams and cloud migration projects.

This role will require experience in migrating SQL Servers instances and databases to Microsoft Azure and is able to provide BAU as part of the shared services team. The SQL Engineer will be playing a key role in cloud migration projects and they must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of modernising SQL Platforms in cloud and support our next generation of products and data initiatives.

 

How will you spend your days?

  • Be responsible and accountable for delivery of SQL Server cloud migration projects, database administration, support and data platform delivery, design and administration, including:
  • Database maintenance and administration tasks
  • Routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of database and related products.
  • Management of database configuration including installing and upgrading software and maintaining relevant documentation in Azure and On Premise.
  • Monitoring database activity and resource usage.
  • Optimising database performance and plans for forecast resource needs.
  • Use of database management system software and tools to collect performance statistics, investigate problems and create reports
  • Drafting and maintenance of procedures and documentation for databases.
  • Contributing to the setting of standards for database objects and ensuring conformance to these standards.
  • Responsible and accountable for all projects assigned, ensuring delivery on time, technical requirements, quality and financial KPI’s are met and delivered with minimal disruption to the client or service provided.
  • Managing risks and mitigation related to the scope of the role, working with auditors and implementing agreed recommendations.
  • Working closely with other operational teams within Shared Services, supporting and resolving major incidents to ensure continuity of service, and minimal disruption to ICT services provided to the clients.
  • Serves as a member of the Change Advisory Board to provide specialist input if required.
  • Ensures that incidents and service requests are responded to in a timely manner and according to agreed standards and ITIL service management procedures. Ensure customers and other interested parties are kept informed of progress and that corrective action is taken to avoid or minimise delays.
  • Ensure that service degradation is minimised, and performance maximised through the delivery of proactive maintenance and automation. Contribute to the continual improvement of proactive maintenance process and procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of trends and best practices around database and associated applications as they pertain to the deployed solutions.
  • Be part of an on-call Rota.

 

How will you stand out?

Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.

We are looking for a candidate with 5+ years of experience in an operational DBA role.

Experience working with Azure

Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills

Strong project management and organisational skills.

Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.

Hold or have the ability to obtain UK Security Clearance

Essential:

SQL Server – all supported versions, SSRS, SSIS

Windows OS

Desirable:

Certifications: Microsoft Certifications

Experience with Azure PaaS, Azure Data Warehouse

Azure Data Factory and Polybase

Experience with using Logic Apps

Experience with AWS cloud services

Redgate SQL monitor
